Extroverts are cyber slackers

January 17th, 2006 Posted in General |

A NEW STUDY into cyberslacking indicates that it is not the quiet ones, or even the most open minded types which are more distracted by the Interweb, but extroverts. The study, from Monash University, reverses previous research and dubs extroverted types as cyberslackers who are more likely to waste time emailing friends and doing general internet searches.

Kerryann Wyatt took two years to complete the study which attempted to match personality types with internet misuse at work

She found that people scoring highly in extroversion were significantly more likely to send higher numbers of both work and non work-related emails.

People who were more open to experience were more likely to use the internet as a valuable tool for information/leisure searches to satisfy their widespread interest and need for stimulation, rather than for personal uses.

IRS to tax your World of Warcraft booty?

January 6th, 2006 Posted in General |

Posted on Gareth Branwyn’s Street Tech:
Julian Dibbell has an interesting piece in the Jan/Feb issue of Legal Affairs where he explores the idea of whether the trading of virtual “goods” in virtual worlds could constitute an income-generating, and therefore, taxable exchange under the IRS rules of barter. This may sound ridiculous on the face of it, but because virtual world goods now have real-world market values, there is a legal argument here (albeit an unsettling one for anybody who plays online multiplayer games or hangs out in SecondLife). The good news is that, when he pursued the question with IRS officials, they cocked their heads to the side like dogs hearing a high-pitched noise, i.e. don’t expect to see 1099 forms shipping with multiplayer games anytime soon.
