Safari RSS Icon Replacer

January 6th, 2006 Posted in Technology |

The developers of the ever popular Firefox and the Microsoft development team working on IE7 have shaken hands and agreed to use the same icon to indicate the presence of feed functionality. If Mozilla and Microsoft can agree on something, maybe we should get in on it too.

To that end, we have created an installer that will replace Safari’s default icon with the icon agreed upon in the Mountain View Accord.

We call it the Safari Standardized Feed Icon Installer. Pretty catchy ehh? And as an added bonus, if you don’t like the new icon, run the installer again and use the “Customize” option to restore Safari’s default icon.

So why do we care about this standardization in the first place? Well, until this morning we didn’t. That was before we read about the recent research conducted by Yahoo! that revealed only 4% of internet users are knowingly utilizing RSS.

Hopefully a standard feed icon, paired with better user education, will encourage more people to use content syndication feeds.
